Do I have to visit Japan to buy properties?
No, it's not necessary to visit Japan but we recommend viewing the property especially if it is your first time buying property in Japan.
If you are unable to visit Japan, we will provide photos, analysis and
detailed information of properties as much as possible to support your
decision.
What do 1R, 1K, 1DK, 1LDK, 2LDK and 3LDK mean?
These are terms refer to the layout of residential properties.
The "1R" is a studio type unit which has a kitchenette within a room.
The "1K" is also a studio type unit but there is a separation between a kitchenette and a room.
The "1DK" is one bedroom unit with a dining room and a kitchen, the kitchen is open to dining room in almost every case.
The "1" of "1LDK" indicates the number of bedrooms, while the "L" stands
for "Living room", "D" for "Dining room" and "K" for "Kitchen", and a
living room, dining room and kitchen are open plan in most cases. The
same applies to 2LDK and 3LDK.
It is normally separately indicated whether or not there is a bathroom,
but usually there is a bath and a separate toilet for layouts greater
than 1LDK. In general, bedrooms are not connected with bathrooms and
there is one common bathroom.
What are the major differences in layouts and finishes of residences between Western styles and Japanese styles?
As mentioned above, bedrooms are not connected with bathrooms in most residences in Japan.
In general, there are several bedrooms with closets and one common
bathroom. The layout of bathroom is also very unique to Japan. As shown
in the figure below, bathtub with shower, wash basin and toilet are
located in separated rooms.
When it comes to the finishes, the most commonly used floor finish is
MDF (engineered wood) floor. It is uncommon to have tiled or stoned
floor for residences in Japan since people do not wear shoes indoors.
Although, there are flats which have Western style layouts and finishes
available in areas popular among expats, like Azabu and Roppongi.
